MFW ECC Highlights: Week 13 Norway

We finished our travels through Norway this week. Here are our highlights.


Bible:  Matthew 8:28-34 & 9:1-17


Memory Verse:  "But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.  He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous."  Matthew 5:44-45

We also have been reading Window on the World this year.  We read about Bulgaria and how God has used dreams and miracles to teach the people about Jesus.  We prayed to help the different people groups love, understand and respect each other and to show churches and Christian groups how to work together.  We are so blessed to be able to worship freely and not have to worry about being persecuted.  We have been praying for these people groups that are not as fortunate all year. I want my girls to know that it is a privilege and to be thankful for the freedoms that we have.

We made this NORWEGIAN RECIPE fruit soup and it was pretty, well ... NASTY! We all took one bite and that was it.  I should have made the baked cod and boiled potatoes.  Oh well.

SCIENCE FOCUS THIS WEEK:

• We talked about Seasonal changes around the world
• The animal year
• The plant year
• Seasonal Behaviors and how seasons affect animals

Hibernation, estivation, migration

FUN FACT:  The arctic tern has the longest migration of any animal.  It flies 25,000 miles each way when it migrates.  It flies from pole to pole.

GEOGRAPHY FOCUS THIS WEEK:

• Nature, farming and industry
• Played our geography game for Europe
• Learned about the flag

Read several interesting Facts About Norway but here are a few:

1. The northern part of Norway is called the "Land of the Midnight Sun."  Here, the summer sun does not set from mid-May through July.  In the winter, the sun does not rise from November to mid-January.  We read a few books about this and found it very interesting but decided we would not like that at all.
2. Norway has the highest standard of living in the world.
3. Norwegians eat four meals a day: breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a late evening meal called kveldsmat.
4. Because the languages are so similar, Norwegians can understand Swedish and Danish.
5. At one time in Norway's history, butter and buttons were used instead of money.

GLOBAL ART PROJECT THIS WEEK:  LAPLAND FELT SQUARE

Did you know?  The Lapps are a tribe from the northernmost areas of four countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia.  They spend a good portion of the year following the migration of reindeer herds through the coldest parts of Europe and Russia near the Arctic Circle, an area called Lapland.  Lapps wear bright blue clothing bordered with brilliant red and yellow felt bands that are easy to see as they travel across the dazzling white snow.
